Learning Some Basic Conversational Spanish
Although it is nice to learn a language so that you are totally fluent, not everyone has the time or inclination to do so. However, it can still be useful to learn some conversational phrases that can help you get by if you do travel to a country where the language is spoken, or if you meet someone who speaks the language. Conversational Spanish phrases are easy to find online, or you can purchase a book that has the basic ones you might need.
Some types of conversational Spanish phrases are more important to learn than others. Think about the things that you say repeatedly every day to people, and concentrate on learning these types of things. These include such things as good morning (Buenas Dias), how are you (Como Estas), thank you (Gracias) and your welcome (De Nada). These will help you to be polite, and to help you understand what people are saying when they greet you.
Another type of important conversational Spanish phrases are those that help you to communicate your needs. If you want something, you can say "Yo quisiera" for I want, and then point to what you want and say "Por favor" for please. "Donde Esta" means "where is", and "el bano" means the bathroom. This is always something useful to know how to ask.
It can also be important to let people know that you don't understand and you don't speak their language. "No Entiendo" means that you don't understand, and "No hablo Espanol" means you don't speak Spanish. You can ask people "Habla Ingles?" in order to see if they might happen to speak English. If they don't, they might be able to find someone who does who can translate back and forth.
Of course there are lots more things that you might want to learn to say when you are learning your conversational Spanish phrases, these are just a few examples. People will really appreciate the fact that you are trying to speak their language, even if your pronunciation is not quite perfect and you have to rely on a lot of gestures. For this reason, it is a good idea to learn as much as you can of the basic phrases that you use commonly.
